In 2015, Yhonnie Scarce mounted 2,000 hand-blown glass yams to the ceiling, creating her installation Thunder Raining Poison. The large work was referring to a site called Breakaway, where in the 1950s British Commonwealth soldiers tested atomic bombs. Each yam represented a member of the local Aboriginal people, many of whom were killed by the insidious radiation. A member of the Kokatha and Nukunu people of South Australia, Scarce’s work often advocates on behalf of Aboriginal populations in powerful and unexpected ways. This exhibition presents selections of her most exciting work as well as archival images from her personal photo collection. —Elena Clavarino
