After bouncing around various universities in his early 20s, Dale Chihuly graduated from the University of Washington in 1965. A few years before he received his degree, Chihuly learned how to melt and fuse glass, a skill that opened a path. He went on to study glassblowing under the artist Harvey Littleton, and then earned an MFA in sculpture from the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1971, Chihuly founded the Pilchuck Glass School, an educational center for glassblowing, and it was there that Chihuly honed the vibrant, evocative style that made his name. His effervescent pieces seem most at home in nature, which is why Chihuly has been exhibited at various botanical gardens in the U.S. and internationally. The artist’s large-scale Garden Cycle is now making its Australian debut at the Adelaide Botanic Garden. —Jack Sullivan
