Gustave Courbet’s A Burial at Ornans depicts the funeral of his great-uncle. A black-clad crowd lingers in a sunless valley, standing awkwardly under a raised crucifix. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of Courbet’s birth, the Chinese artist Yan Pei-Ming pays tribute to that great painting with his own A Burial in Shanghai, equally somber. —E.C.
