Style-wise, Sir Elton John is known for extravagance. His flamboyant capes, gold jackets, and iron-on denim patches shaped the 1970s and 80s. His style extends to his art collection, which includes photography. John and his husband, David Furnish, have amassed over 7,000 diverse prints from the 20th century. There are images of Marilyn Monroe and Miles Davis, definitive stills from the 60s Civil Rights Movement and 80s AIDS protests. Robert Mapplethorpe is here, and the South African artist Zanele Muholi, now celebrated across the globe. This exhibition, the V&A’s largest photography show to date, presents approximately 300 images. —Elena Clavarino
