“The work’s appearance is conditioned by the spectator’s gaze,” the French artist Xavier Veilhan has said. Veilhan likes to challenge that gaze, creating sculptures that are distinct and transfixing even as they fit effortlessly into an architectural environment. In 2019, in the plaza at the Palace of Versailles, Veilhan placed a sculpted horse-drawn carriage—lifesize, purple, Cubism meets comic book, a royal color meets the color of Pop. The dynamic sculpture was completely at home in the stately setting. At Perrotin, Veilhan arranges human and animal forms around the gallery space. Some have been fitted with geometric shapes, others seem more like silhouettes. Some are small, others are monumentally large. —E.C.
