The world changed for women between 1900 and 1975. There was suffrage, a long fight that concluded in 1920 with the ratification of the 19th Amendment, followed three years later by the Equal Rights Amendment. Then came the Second World War, a time when married women across the globe left their homes to do the jobs that conscripted men had left empty; they powered factories, shipyards, and offices. In 1960, the F.D.A. approved the first oral contraceptive pill. While all this unfolded, women with cameras documented the milestones. In “A Legacy of Light,” works by 80 women photographers—Berenice Abbott, Imogen Cunningham, Tina Modotti, and many more—are on view in the form of prints, postcards, photobooks, and magazines. —Elena Clavarino
