“She longed to be to him something more than a piece of sentient prettiness,” writes Edith Wharton in The House of Mirth, “a passing diversion to his eye and brain.” The exhibition “Women Painting Women” offers a break from the long tradition of women caught on canvas by the male gaze. The exhibition features works from the 1960s to today, made by 46 female artists—among them Alice Neel, Jenny Saville, Emma Amos, Dana Schutz, and Lorna Simpson. The show is organized around four themes: The Body, Nature Personified, Color as Portrait, and Selfhood. —Clara Molot
