The latest film from the South African artist William Kentridge—City Deep—is set in his hometown of Johannesburg and features that Kentridge creation Soho Eckstein, a power-hungry mining magnate. This is Kentridge’s 11th animated film (created from drawings photographed, partially erased, redrawn, photographed again, etc.), and it sees Eckstein’s demise set against the country’s transition into democracy. Also on display are the large-scale drawings used to create the film; drawings from Kentridge’s new publication, Waiting for the Sibyl; and fascinating bronze sculptures that form a Kentridgean lexicon. —E.C.
