While the Rest of Us Die: Secrets of America's Shadow Government

If there’s one thing still capable of eliciting surprise after the year we’ve had, it’s While The Rest of Us Die, a six-part series based on a 2017 book by Garrett Graff, who is also an executive producer on the series. Narrated by Jeffrey Wright (Westworld), it tells the story of the American government’s secret doomsday plans. The notion of saving itself while ordinary citizens die comes up over and over again, from the dozens of bunkers in place throughout the U.S., to a secret air force, to a plan to suspend democracy in favor of the interests of an elite class. “This isn’t new,” Graff told Variety. “In fact, in the seventy years since the Cold War, the U.S. has long prioritized spending trillions of dollars in the wrong places in the wrong ways, a problem that has been felt from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan to the streets of American cities.” It may not be new, but the coronavirus has brought this reality into harsh focus. —J.V.
