“It is not only what we have inherited from our father and ‘mother’ that walks in us,” Mrs. Alving laments in Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts. Family secrets and intergenerational traumas are passed on, too. “They have no vitality, but they cling to us all the same, and we cannot shake them off.” A reimagining of Ibsen’s tragedy, When The Crows Visit, is a patriarchal haunting set in modern-day India. A young son, accused of a violent crime, returns home to his well-meaning mother, who must reckon with the “sins of his father and his forefathers,” conjured by her son in the shape of crows. —C.J.F.
