What We Talk About When We Talk About Ann Frank

Based on Nathan Englander’s 2011 short story, the new comedy starring The West Wing’s Joshua Malina isn’t about Anne Frank. It’s about identity, politics, and heritage. “If you can imagine a script that combines the bruising anger of David Mamet and the wit of Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David,” the critic Clive Davis wrote in The Times, “you’ll have some idea of how raucous a piece of theatre this is.” Phil and Debbie are nonreligious liberals living in a luxurious home in Florida. When Debbie’s childhood friend Shoshana—now an Orthodox Israeli—visits the couple with her husband, tensions flare. Shoshana questions the couple’s attachment to material comforts, while Phil is bewildered by her adherence to traditions, like wearing a wig and abstaining from physical touch. Questions are raised about what it means to be Jewish, and only one thing eases the tension between Debbie and Shoshana: a game they played as little girls, pretending to be Anne Frank in hiding and wondering who would help them and who would betray them. —Jeanne Malle
