The Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864–1916) traveled and worked throughout Europe as modernism spread across the continent, changing art forever. Instead of hopping on the bandwagon of the trending movement, Hammershøi found inspiration in the subtle yet haunting style of Johannes Vermeer and the romanticism of the Danish Golden Age. These influences are palpable in his paintings of shadowy interiors, which are at once cool and warm, inviting and daunting. Hauser & Wirth debuts its newest gallery, in Basel, with the first solo exhibition of Hammershøi’s work in Switzerland. The show presents 16 paintings, many on loan from private collections and never before on public display. —Lucy Horowitz
