The Latvian-American artist Vija Celmins, known for her magical, mixed-media renderings of the natural world, has been the subject of over 40 solo exhibitions since 1965. “They’re like translations,” Celmins has said of her works, “and then part of it is fiction, which is invention.” A new exhibition surveys Celmins’s 50-year career, including some of her earliest paintings from the 1960s but also, notably, her art from the last five years. —J.V.
