Vermeer and the Masters of Genre Painting

Mar 26, 2020 – Aug 30, 2021
Constitution Ave NW, Washington, DC 20565, USA

Many of the great Dutch masters specialized in genre painting, depictions of the country’s elegant men and women performing their everyday rituals. Vermeer painted housewives going about their routines, but his work exudes a hazy, peculiar mystique. The women look as if they have secrets untold. Similarly, Vermeer’s contemporaries Gerard ter Borch, Gerrit Dou, and Frans van Mieris paint domestic moments, their works capturing the complicated nuances of family dynamics. In this virtual display, pieces from the Dutch Golden Age are re-examined. —E.C.
