There have been Van Gogh exhibitions that focus on his paintings of olive trees and groves, but there’s yet to be one centered on his cypresses. Until now. “Van Gogh’s Cypresses” celebrates some of the most famous conifers in art history. Wheat Field with Cypresses and The Starry Night are at the heart of this 40-work exhibition, which explores the motif of cypresses in Dutch art. See how Van Gogh’s own depiction of trees changed over the course of his life—from early subjects in Arles to something else entirely by the time he was in the asylum in Saint-Rémy. “I’m astonished that no one has yet done them as I see them,” the artist remarked late in his career. Illustrated letters and drawings join these storied paintings for this rare occasion. —Clara Molot
