A white creature, horselike but with the spiraling horn of a narwhal, masculine and powerful yet also innocent and pure. The mythical unicorn! Only a virgin maiden, or a king, could tame one of these magical beasts. In this exhibition of 150 works, historic and contemporary incarnations of the unicorn trace its long life in art and our imaginations. For instance, Albrecht Dürer, Angela Hampel, Gustave Moreau, René Magritte, Rebecca Horn, Arnold Böcklin, and Hans Baldung Grien were all drawn to the subject. Also on view will be a 13th-century Persian tile of a unicorn fighting an elephant, and an 18th-century Tibetan sculpture of a kneeling unicorn. —Elena Clavarino
