This exhibition tells the story of photography through its representations of nature, beginning in the mid 19th century when it took cues from all things green or growing. On display are William Henry Fox Talbot’s experiments with paper negatives—precursors to photography as we know it today—as well as work by little known artists such as Charles Jones, the English gardener whose modernist images of plants remained unknown for 20 years after his death, and Anna Atkins, one of the first female photographers. The sprightly botanical theme is present all the way through to more recent advancements in photography, as illustrated by Robert Mapplethorpe and Nobuyoshi Araki. —J.V.
