“If someone’s excited to get their picture taken, I’m excited to photograph them,” Ethan James Green told Vogue, a publication with whom he often works. “I think when you have that combination, you can create something really beautiful.” Green’s subjects are usually megastars like Rihanna and Margot Robbie, shot for the covers of glossy magazines. These portraits, while formal, capture a sense of the person, which most celebrity photo-ops do not. For a group show with his friends, the artists Sam Penn and Martine Gutierrez, the three are their own subjects and their riffs on the “self-portrait” are intimate. David Velasco, the former editor-in-chief of Artforum and a friend of the photographers, says of the images on view, “Can you imagine? Being both seducer and seduced.” —Jensen Davis
