About an hour south of Paris, nestled in the Vallée de Chevreuse, rests the sprawling 17th-century Coubertin castle. It is not filled with tired tourists like the nearby Chateau de Versailles; its halls are reserved for Ateliers Saint-Jacques, a cooperative of master-craftsmen and their protégées. The atelier’s most recent series was created in collaboration with the Israeli-born, Paris-based designer Raphael Navot—who has previously worked with David Lynch, Loro Piana, and many of the best hotels in France—and the gallery owner Melanie Courbet. The limited-edition capsule collection is inspired by the geological transformation of natural materials. Tables made of travertine replicate the beautiful ripples of petrified wood, and a series of light fixtures illuminates the essence of bronze. The collection tells “the story of craft in direct relation to the material’s origin and characteristic.” —Lucy Horowitz
