In 1981, Thatcherism was rampant. Tony Cragg, a young man, was dissatisfied with the general state of affairs in Britain. Out of scrap materials, Cragg constructed the wall relief Britain Seen by the North, which was exhibited at Whitechapel Gallery. The fragments made up a map of Britain—lopsided—prompting critics to describe it as a “relationship of the part to the whole.” Forty years later that description is still relevant, even though Cragg now uses more permanent materials, such as wood, plaster, stone, and fiberglass. This exhibition looks at 20 sculptures and 20 drawings by the acclaimed artist. —Elena Clavarino
