You may be familiar with Jake Adelstein, the American journalist and crime writer who spent most of his career in Japan. The first non-Japanese journalist on staff at the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, Adelstein worked the police beat, which meant reporting on Tokyo’s criminal underworld. HBO is now streaming a new series based on his 2009 memoir, and he’s played by Ansel Elgort (Tony in Steven Spielberg’s recent West Side Story). There’s a good cop, a bad cop, a group of criminal yakuza who are terrifying, and a nightclub hostess played by Rachel Keller, tough and beautiful, who captures everyone’s fancy. —Elena Clavarino
