“I see my photographs as meditations, it is as simple as that,” says one of the world’s foremost photographers, Thomas Joshua Cooper. And he seems to take those photographs in a meditative state. Pinpointing a location on a map, studying it, and then traveling across the globe to the very place, Cooper sometimes waits weeks for the right shot. The effect? Landscapes in black-and-white—printed on selenium-toned silver gelatin—so powerfully still they bring the viewer to stillness. The exhibition complements the Cooper show at LACMA, “The World’s Edge,” with 19 monumental works taken close by, off the coast of California. —E.C.
