Light Into Space

The minimalist and geometric Light and Space movement, which originated in 1960s Southern California, has now reached Mumbai. Known for using materials such as glass, neon, fluorescent light, resin, and cast acrylic—often formed into installations—the movement’s prominent artists include Robert Irwin, John Chamberlain, Mary Corse, Walter De Maria, Dan Flavin, Nancy Holt, Robert Smithson, and François Morellet. They’re all here in “Light Into Space,” an exhibition curated by the Dia Art Foundation. These are works you don’t just see but experience. As Irwin said, the movement was not about “making paintings or objects at all. What we are really dealing with is our state of consciousness and the shape of our perceptions.” —Carolina de Armas
