William Morris patterns. Art Nouveau. Hindu art. One thinks of these forms when looking at the paintings of Shuling Guo. Her influences actually come from her childhood in Chaoshan, China—the temple imagery and folk traditions she grew up with. Guo is now based in Philadelphia, and this exhibition at Hollis Taggart, titled “Temple II,” sees her experiences as a mother absorbed into structures both botanical and biological. The body is a temple, and in Guo’s visions, that temple is curvaceous, involucre, and radiant with light and color. The show includes Guo’s first site-specific mural, which transforms the gallery into a sacred space.
