If you rebuild the the past can you capture its truth? Is a reconstruction objective? The German artist Thomas Demand addresses such existential questions in his work. Demand sources photographs and footage of historical events, then reconstructs these scenes with meticulously crafted paper models. Once completed, he photographs the life-size constructions. And then he destroys them. “Things just enter reality through photographs,” Demand once explained. This exhibition, the result of three years of planning, presents 70 large-scale artworks, wallpaper installations, and moving-image pieces—each offering a look into his constructed reality. —Elena Clavarino
