In 2010, the philosopher Daniel C. Dennett and the researcher Linda LaScola collaborated on a paper titled “Caught in the Pulpit: Leaving Belief Behind.” It was a study that saw them interviewing 35 clergy, students, and seminary professors who over time had lost their faith. In 2013, the paper was expanded into a book. The Civilians, a downtown theater company, has adapted the book into a play. Using the interview text as dialogue, The Unbelieving focuses on Catholics, Episcopalians, Evangelicals, Fundamentalists, Jews, Mormons, and Muslims whose beliefs have altered or evaporated, leaving them in limbo. Staged as a series of interviews, the play is directed by Steve Cosson. —Jensen Davis
