There’s a new spring to Lily Stockman’s work. Known for her pastel palette, soothing symmetry, and melting borders, her latest exhibition, “Tilting Chair,” breaks some of these rules. Hues are brighter, shapes have a new elasticity, and symmetry is ever so slightly skewed. Stockman, who is based in Los Angeles, was inspired by New England’s 19th-century Shaker tilting chair. Due to a ball-bearing mechanism built into the bottom of the back legs, the chair allowed sitters to recline, affording backward dips into deeper thought. Stockman has allowed herself to do the same in her artistic practice. —Clara Molot
