The painter Polina Barskaya, born in Ukraine in 1984, lives with her husband and young daughter in Città della Pieve, in Umbria, Italy. It’s a town with a magnificent cathedral and one cafe, a peaceful place. Here, as well as on the family’s travels, Barskaya paints interiors—vibrant rooms in which one or more of them sit or sleep or read. Her style has touches of Edgar Degas and Alice Neel, but the sensibility is distinctly her own. Colors are rich, details delicate. And the light! It bounces around these quiet rooms, alive and wreaking wonder. Barskaya’s paintings (acrylic on panel) are fascinating and not to be missed. —Laura Jacobs
