“I worry that humanity has been advanced to its present level of incompetency because evolution works on the Peter Principle.” That’s a line from Jane Wagner’s one-woman show The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, which premiered on Broadway in 1985. Wagner wrote the play for the comedian and actress Lily Tomlin, who is now her wife, and Tomlin took home a Tony for her acclaimed performance. In a brave act, the comic Cecily Strong steps into Tomlin’s role in this revival, morphing into 12 different characters over 90 minutes. She starts as a mischievously clever observer of society around her, and changes into something else entirely. Directed by Leigh Silverman. —E.C.
