The Royal Ballet: The Cellist / Dances at a Gathering

Feb 17 – Mar 4, 2020
Bow St, Covent Garden, London WC2E 9DD, UK

The choreographer Cathy Marston is on everybody’s dance card these days. She makes ballets with stories sourced from literature—Lolita (2015), Jane Eyre (2016), Dangerous Liaisons (2017), Lady Chatterley’s Lover (2018)—you get the picture. It’s a trend with traction, as narrative seems to be returning to classical dance after decades of extreme abstraction. Marston’s new ballet, The Cellist, is based on the life and artistry of the late cellist Jacqueline du Pré, who died in 1987, from MS, at age 42. The new ballet is paired with the Jerome Robbins masterpiece of 1969, set to piano pieces by Chopin, Dances at a Gathering. —L.J.
