The Rose Family

Streaming on NFB

It’s 50 years since Canada’s October Crisis. Preceded by the bombing of the Montreal Stock Exchange in 1969, the infamous incident of 1970 saw the kidnapping and murder of Quebec Labor Minister Pierre LaPorte. The perpetrator of all this mayhem was the Front de libération de Québec, a domestic terrorist group calling for the independence of Quebec from Canada. Now, in an interesting twist, the incident is examined by Félix Rose, a filmmaker whose father and uncle were key members of the Front. In The Rose Family, the younger Rose attempts to understand what led his own family to commit such heinous crimes. The result is a lesson in history, but also in human nature and its predisposition to radicalization. —J.V.
