Established in 1986, the Newberry Consort is one of America’s premier early-music ensembles. Its musicians come from all over the world and its programming is endlessly imaginative. The ensemble’s next concert—Corkscrews, Coils, & Clocks—is charmingly titled. But it’s the subtitle that grabs you: “Music from Ockeghem to Josquin celebrating the musical, technological, and scientific inventions from the 15th–16th centuries.” Think shawms, dulcians, sackbuts, slide trumpets, and recorders. The ensemble will be joined by Mary Vanhoozer-Rodriguez, a Chicago-based specialist on hurdy-gurdy, and Dani Zanuttini-Frank on plectrum and Renaissance lute. Projection artist Shawn Keener will display images and drawings of 15th- and 16th-century inventions, including diagrams by Leonardo, Johannes Gutenberg, and more. —Laura Jacobs
On March 13 and 15, the concerts are in Chicago; the March 14 performance is in Evanston. Check the Newberry Consort Web site for location details.
