No, your ears won’t be deceiving you. At 62, star baritone Gerald Finley sounds better than ever, returning to the Metropolitan Opera in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. He’s the Count clinging to the old rites and sexual privileges that made aristocratic life cushy in 18th-century Spain. But he’s about to discover that democracy is in the air. Richard Eyre’s production finds a compelling parallel between 1930s Spain on the brink of Fascism and its monarchical ancestors. And everyone in the cast is at the highest level. Conductor James Gaffigan preserves Mozart’s economy and grace while allowing the superb singers space to work some personal flourishes. The final two performances are Saturday evening, April 16, and Thursday evening, April 21. —Joel Lobenthal
