Who hasn’t looked back over their life and wondered, “Did I make the right choice?” David Lan’s new play, The Land of the Living, explores this universal question. At the end of W.W. II, Ruth, a U.N. caretaker, finds herself in charge of a young boy named Thomas. He was taken from Eastern Europe by the Nazis and is living with German adoptive parents. Ruth must decide whether to send the boy back to his native Poland or to leave him where he is, with a Bavarian couple. Forty-five years later, when Thomas visits Ruth, she is faced with the consequences of her choice. The wondrous Juliet Stevenson takes on the role of Ruth, and the BAFTA-winning Stephen Daldry directs. —Alice Browne
