In November 1995, with her marriage to Prince Charles falling apart, Princess Diana did an interview with the BBC’s Martin Bashir. Sitting in Kensington Palace, her legs crossed in a demure black skirt, Diana broke the royal family’s cardinal rule—“never complain, never explain”—by revealing personal secrets that included: postnatal depression, cutting, and bulimia. Most shocking of all, she discussed her husband’s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles. The marriage ended shortly after the interview aired. In recent years, however, the nefarious strategies that Bashir used to secure the interview have come to light, and Diana’s boys, William and Harry, convinced the BBC to stop airing it. The story of the interview, both its origins and its legacy, is the subject of a new play by Jonathan Maitland, a former BBC journalist. Yolanda Kettle stars as Diana. —Jensen Davis
