Harold Pinter’s play The Homecoming had its premiere in 1965 on the London stage. The 1967 New York production—directed, as in London, by Sir Peter Hall—won Pinter the second of his three Tony Awards for Best Play. Pinter’s classic is set in the North London home of Max, a retired butcher whose two younger sons, the boxer-in-training Joey and the pimp Lenny, live with him. In walks the eldest son Max, a philosophy professor, and his wife of six years, Ruth, whom the family has never met. Competition and sexual aggression simmer beneath the teasing, bating behavior of the brothers, and Ruth plays them like a violin. Often revived, The Homecoming gets a fresh spin at the Young Vic, directed by the Olivier-nominated Matthew Dunster. —Jensen Davis
