Like many of their compatriots and contemporaries, Goethe and Schiller were obsessed with antiquity—so, consequently, was Franz Schubert, an unparalleled connoisseur of the German Romantic poets. Schubert’s songs on Greek themes are numerous and highly distinguished. A single recital cannot encompass them all. The baritone Aris Argiris and pianist Peter Bortfeldt offer a selection of their favorites. And if they don’t program “Die Götter Grienchenlands” (The Gods of Greece) on the main program, insist on it as an encore. —Matthew Gurewitsch
