When his film The Wind Rises arrived in 2013, Hayao Miyazaki was adamant: this was to be his final movie. It wasn’t. The Boy and the Heron was released in 2023 and maintained Miyazaki’s reputation as one of the great filmmakers of our time. The Boy and the Heron carries over many motifs found in other Miyazaki films. In following a young protagonist into a mythical and mysterious world, it is similar to both Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro in its themes. At the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, a special exhibition highlights the film’s hand-drawn technique, with real frame-by-frame illustrations on display. If this is Miyazaki’s actual last film—he is 83, after all—then this special exhibition may be a final opportunity to see new original content by the acclaimed director. —Zack Hauptman
