“Our vision was to tell the story of Jay-Z, and the ways in which he has shaped culture over a vast body of work,” explains Ian Schatzberg, co-creative director of General Idea, the agency behind a new multimedia exhibition at The Brooklyn Public Library. Schatzberg’s team, in partnership with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, has fulfilled its aim. “The Book of HOV” features countless archived objects—music, related artwork, memorabilia, statues, clothing, news clippings—and leaves no stone of the rapper and mogul’s career unturned. The library’s CEO, Linda E. Johnson, calls the show “the biggest production we’ve ever done.” Jay-Z himself was unaware of the project. “The Book of HOV” was revealed to him in surprise, and has since received his stamp of approval. If its breadth satisfies the discerning Hov, it should satisfy you, too. —Jack Sullivan
