Set in 2046, The Apiary imagines a world in which climate change has all but wiped out bees. The play, written by Kate Douglas, is confined to a subterranean lab where three scientists—the manager, Gwen; Pilar; and a new hire, Zora—do “palliative care” on the few surviving broods. Just before the underfunded lab’s quarterly budget meeting, a former employee is found dead near the synthetic apiary. The mood in the lab grows fraught when Zora comes up with a plan to save the bees; it requires volunteers for an ethically dubious test. Kate Whoriskey directs the play’s debut run. —Jensen Davis
