After centuries of neglect, Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, is having himself quite a moment. Born in Guadeloupe to a French plantation owner and an enslaved Creole mother, young Joseph was sent to France to improve himself, and this he did, both as a soldier of fortune and as a multi-hyphenate musician, tutoring the brood of Marie-Antoinette at a time when Mozart was pounding the Paris pavement and couldn’t get arrested. If later generations called the Chevalier “the Black Mozart,” you can bet his contemporaries never did. The Anonymous Lover, his sole surviving opera, is a ramshackle affair, but one of considerable musical charms. Will they suffice to keep it in the repertoire? Time will tell. The current production presents the musical numbers in the original French, but replaces the 18th-century dialogue with a new script, in English, by Kirsten Greenidge. —Matthew Gurewitsch
