A 30-year age difference between them, the writer Christopher Isherwood and the artist Don Bachardy lived together as an openly gay couple for more than three decades, until Isherwood’s death in 1986. Based on a trove of the pair’s love letters, this podcast, starring Simon Callow as Isherwood and Alan Cumming as Bachardy, sets their story amid a 20th-century coterie of creative friends and colleagues. The eight-episode series, which includes appearances from David Hockney and Bachardy himself, culminates with an audio dramatization of A Meeting by the River, a play adapted by Isherwood and Bachardy from the former’s last novel. Starring Dominic West, the play is directed by Anthony Page, who first directed the production for the Royal Court Theatre in 1968. —J.V.
