In Heretic, a psychological thriller written by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods (The Quiet Place), two young missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are assigned to visit the home of a man named Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant). It soon becomes clear to Sister Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Sister Paxton (Chloe East) that Reed has no intention of converting to Mormonism. Something far more sinister is afoot. Reed puts the girls through rigorous and increasingly menacing theological questioning, and before long the film twists from thriller to horror. Those familiar with Grant’s bumbling rom-com personas will not recognize this version of him—vicious, brilliant, and utterly terrifying in the role of a psychotic puppet master. Most terrifying of all is the big question Heretic asks but does not answer: How much do we believe just because we are told? —Paulina Prosnitz
