The prolific documentarian behind films like The National Parks: America’s Best Idea and Brooklyn Bridge is back with a new six-part series about a crucial chapter—indeed, the opening chapter—of American history: the American Revolution. Burns says the project was “a 10-year labor of love,” and claimed he “won’t work on a more important project than this one.” With voiceovers from Tom Hanks, Kenneth Branagh, and Claire Danes, among others, the series uses reenactments, landscape footage, and recovered maps to create an evenhanded account of “the story that we think we know.” The series also highlights the previously unknown narratives of Native Americans, Black Americans, Loyalists, and French fighters. —Paulina Prosnitz
