For an Irish immigrant who was once on the path to priesthood, Terry O’Neill slipped seamlessly into the ritzy lives of the celebrities he photographed. He also had a nose for stars on the rise. O’Neill, who died in 2019, was one of the first photographers to work with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. He shadowed Elton John for years, capturing the famous shot of the rhinestone-clad singer performing at Dodger Stadium in 1975. That same year he photographed the young Bruce Springsteen, who was on Sunset Boulevard promoting his upcoming album Born to Run. The relationships forged between O’Neill and these young stars lend his images, on display at Fotografiska, a rare intimacy. —Paulina Prosnitz
