Tender, a multimedia collaboration between the artist Jill Magid and Creative Time, an organization that commissions public art projects, was a response to the collective trauma of the coronavirus. In its earliest iteration, it consisted simply of pennies—120,000 of them, to be exact, equivalent to one stimulus payment of $1200. Each new-minted penny was engraved around the edge with the phrase “THE BODY WAS ALREADY SO FRAGILE”—a powerful yet ambiguous statement pulled from an article about the condition of the economy. Then the pennies were released into circulation. In its latest iteration, retitled Tender Presence, the project comes to the landmark building The Dime, formerly the Dime Savings Bank in Williamsburg. In the vacant building, live music will guide viewers through the space, which contains a sculptural installation. A short film about 2020’s pandemic and lockdown ends each session. Tender Presence takes place over two weekends in May and April, with scheduled times for drop-in visits and performances. —Sophie Kemp
