“When I entered university, I already knew that I was dedicated to cinema and video production,” Tao Hui said in 2016. “It became my main form of expression. Everything you will see in my videos, I filmed myself: I never make use of someone else’s images that already exist.” Born in 1987 in Yunyang, China, Tao Hui grew up during a time of rapid modernization. As a child of the 1990s, he was influenced by the era’s Chinese television, which marked the rise of mass consumer culture in the country. In 2010, Tao Hui moved to Beijing to study at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, where his early oil paintings delved into the complexities of a cultural crisis. Today, he works across various mediums—video, installation, and sculpture—and his focus is consistent. In this show, which features several new commissions, Tao Hui offers sharp commentary on the capitalist world. —Elena Clavarino
