In Paris, 100 years ago, pavilions stretched from the Grand Palais to the Pont Alexandre III for a monumental art fair—the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. It was the first showcase of Art Deco—a style of design characterized by geometric patterns such as zigzags and chevrons, streamlined forms, and luxurious materials. It sparked a revolution in building and furniture, which emerged across Paris and then the world. Set in the Villa Empain, one of the era’s masterpieces, this exhibition celebrates the movement’s centennial. Music from the Années folles, or “crazy years,” as the French called the Roaring Twenties, will be playing in the background. —Elena Clavarino
