Sydney Symphony Orchestra in Sounds of Australia

May 2–3, 2025
14/2 Circular Quay E, Sydney NSW 2000, Australia

Of the four composers represented on this intriguing bill, three belong to Australian First Nations whose very names strike chords of wonder in the ear. Brenda Gifford, a member of the Yuin people of New South Wales and Eastern Victoria, writes music reflecting “a new world where the didgeridoo mixes with classical instruments and forms.” Nardi Simpson, a Yuwaalaraa from New South Wales, is a co-founder of the indigenous folk group Stiff Gins. The viola-playing Noongar Aaron Wyatt, from Perth, has conducted the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, a first for a First Nations Australian at any of the continent’s top orchestras. The fourth of the composers, Christopher Sainsbury, teaches at the Australian National University School of Music in Canberra with a focus on songwriting and contemporary Australian Indigenous music. Instrumentalists from the Sydney Symphony Orchestra will form unaccustomed if not unique chamber combos in selections including Simpson’s Burruguu, which explores the idea of the creation of the world but also of music, and Wyatt’s Cirrus, inspired by the Melbourne sky on a bright but cold day. No spoilers as to what to expect of Sainsbury’s evocatively titled From the Deep or Gifford’s Walimbaya (Return). —Matthew Gurewitsch
