“John Adams not only writes the most brilliant, amazingly fun music,” says the Icelandic piano phenomenon Víkingur Ólafsson, “he also gives that music the most amazing titles.” Must the Devil Have All the Good Tunes?, which is the third of the composer’s piano concertos, premiered at Disney Hall in 2019 with Yuja Wang at the keyboard and Gustavo Dudamel on the podium. Since then, Ólafsson has premiered a fourth Adams piano concerto, called After the Fall. How thrilling to hear and see him playing catchup with his occasional duo partner Wang, with Adams himself on the podium. Tangos by Piazzola, Stravinsky’s bejeweled Song of the Nightingale, and Prokofiev’s snappy Lieutenant Kijé Suite round out the program. —Matthew Gurewitsch
